October is the dedicated month for ADHD awareness. ADHD stands for Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. People with this disorder show a persistent pattern of lack of concentration, ability to focus, hyperactivity and/or impulsivity which affects their day-to-day life.
The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence estimates the global prevalence of ADHD in children to be around 5%, and in adults in the UK at 3% – 4%.
There are common misconceptions surrounding ADHD including the belief that hyperactivity is problematic, that it will negatively and permanently impact one’s education. However, due to the plenty of research done on the disorder, there are plenty of resources, support and advice to help those with ADHD to succeed in life like everyone else.
One thing that many people with ADHD aren’t aware of is the fact that they are eligible to apply for Disabled Students Allowance (DSA). DSA acts as funding support to cover any study-related costs you may have due to your disability. Both DMU and UOL offer to help students with their application.
DMU has a variety of support if you have been, or are yet to be, diagnosed with ADHD. Appointments can be booked by DMU students via MyGateway to speak to a member of staff about support available, including help with booking a ADHD screening.
Also, at DMU, there is an ADHD Social Group on campus every Tuesday at 12pm in the Breathing Space, Portland Building. This social group allows you, with or without an official diagnosis, to meet like-minded individuals, make new friends, develop skills to tackle procrastination and time management.
University of Leicester offer support to students with ADHD through their AccessAbility scheme. This would start with a member of staff understanding the difficulties you face with ADHD. You can contact them via email by accessable@le.ac.uk or by telephone on 0116 252 5002.
