Happy New Year! With the start of 2025 and the new academic term, many students will be thinking about what new years resolutions they can have. It is important to make achievable goals which will aid personal growth throughout the year. The worst thing to do is set impossible goals as it will just lead to disappointment! Here are a few simple, and easily achievable new years resolutions for students.

Join a society

If you haven’t done so already, join one of your university’s many societies. They are a great way to make friends, try something new and feel a sense of belonging in a community of like-minded individuals. You can view DMU’s range of societies here and UOL’s societies here.

If you can’t find a society that you are interested in, you can also create your own society with some friends!

Get a new hobby

Hobbies are a perfect way to unwind after a day of lectures. The new year is a good opportunity to learn a new hobby, whether it’s baking, painting, running or anything else, designate time to do one.

Events at your Students Union may also help you find passion for a new hobby. For example, DSU is hosting a Tote Bag Painting Session and UOL Students Union is hosting a free Yoga and Meditation Session.

Prioritise self-care

University life can be tough and demanding, which is why it is crucial to prioritise self-care. This includes eating well, sleeping well, taking time out of your day to relax and do something you enjoy.

If you need any help with self-care and looking after yourself, you can contact your university’s wellbeing team.

Look for work experience or graduate jobs

If you want to set a new years resolution that enhances your studies and learning, looking for relevant work experience, or looking for graduate jobs (if you’re in your final year) can be a useful one to do. Both DMU and UOL support students with finding work experience, placements and graduate jobs.

The key is to set a resolution to look for not get work experience or a graduate job to ensure it is an achievable goal for yourself in 2025. It also means that if you are successful in getting one, you will feel pride.

January also means the colder weather which means possible condensation in your student home. Read our previous blog on ways to reduce condensation in your room, download our PDF guide here or contact Sulets by phone on 0116 467 0315 or send an email to enquiries@sulets.com.
