It may be early in the academic year, but it’s never too early to start looking for your student home for next year. You don’t want to wait too long and have the best places snatched up, especially for those looking for housing with a large number of people. They will go quickly so make sure you are on top of it. The best houses always get let quickly! If you leave it too late you will have less choice and likely be living further away from campus.
The best way to start is by determining your weekly budget and the number of people you plan to live with. It seems simple but the last thing you want is to end up looking for a house and then finding out that someone doesn’t want to live with you. The next part of your process once you have found a house in your price range is to arrange a viewing of your house. You can visit the office located in the De Montfort Students’ Union building on campus. Alternatively, you can call 0116 467 0315 or go on the Sulets website and use the arrange a viewing form. Viewings are highly recommended to ensure you can see the house and the area you could be living in.
After the house viewing if it is to your and your friends’ liking, you should designate your lead tenant. This is an important decision so you should make sure whoever you pick is reliable. The lead tenant will then start filling out the application process through StuRents. Once all guarantor requirements are met and the deposits paid you will then be able to sign your tenancy agreement. Make sure you, and your flat mates read through your agreement properly to make sure you understand your legal obligations to pay the rent on the specified payment dates.
