Supporting students beyond accommodation: Vanesa’s experience with Sulets
At Sulets, we go beyond providing student accommodation—we help our tenants gain valuable work experience. Recently, we hired one of our tenants, Vanesa, into a temporary Sales Assistant role, giving her an opportunity to develop professional skills while studying.
Finding the role
A fourth-year Modern Languages student at the University of Leicester, Vanesa was successful in her application for the role which we shared to all our student tenants.
With retail experience at Superdrug, Zara, and Flannels, she was keen to gain office based experience, which is often difficult for students to secure.
Skills gained
Vanesa’s role involved assisting students with accommodation, handling customer enquiries, and supporting the sales team. Key skills she developed include:
- Sales techniques and negotiation
- Excel and data management
- Professional communication via phone and email
- Time management balancing work and final-year studies
- Confidence in a professional setting
Overcoming challenges
Balancing work with university was a challenge, requiring her to adjust her timetable. She also had to learn how to handle difficult customers calmly and effectively, using detailed notes to stay organised.
Advice to other students
Vanesa encourages students to apply for opportunities, even if they doubt their chances: “You never lose anything by trying.” She also values a positive work environment, crediting her Sulets colleagues for their support.
Looking ahead
As she prepares to graduate in July 2025, Vanesa is still exploring career options but is drawn to international business. Her experience at Sulets has reinforced her strengths in communication and working with people.
