Bede Island is the area that runs inside the loop of the River Soar up to the mouth of the Union Canal. On the very edge of the De Montfort Campus is the entrance to Bede Park, a bright, lively space in the day with an outdoor gym and parkour facilities, as well as a large children’s play area. Bede Park hosts the Riverside Festival which has been running for more than 20 years. This Festival includes arts stalls, music, canal rallies, and even spills over to castle gardens where they have an environment focussed event for children. In 2020 this event will run on the 6th and 7th of June.
Bede Street Community Garden Group is a residents club that is a “Community-led neighborhood project, working to transform public spaces and bring communities together.” They host community bike days with giveaways and cycle maintenance as well as outdoor community projects and events. Have a look at their Facebook page to see what’s happening next.
Services and eating out :
Western Boulevard runs along the outline of Bede Island and has many amenities close by. You are just 3 minutes away from Lidl, a student’s paradise. On Western Boulevard there is a small square with a brilliant dessert place, Doorstep Desserts. They make a range of delicious puddings and breakfasts, as well as light savoury snacks. They also are available from Deliveroo. Just next door is the Riverside Pharmacy where you can get a consultation with no need to book. Perhaps the crowning glory of this area is Pizza Kings. This takeaway is a must for any DMU student on a night out. Wednesday night social wouldn’t be the same without finishing with cheesy chips. If you would rather a branded takeaway there is also a Dominoes in this vicinity.
